Capsule endoscopy revealing small-intestinal lymphangiectasia and GI stromal tumor polyps in neurofibromatosis type 1 - 16/08/11
| Commentary Neurofibromatosis type 1 exhibits many GI manifestations, including a variety of tumors, such as GIST and neuroendocrine tumors. Dilated lymph vessels and enlarged lymph nodes also have been reported, although mainly in the extremities. In the present case, it is likely that the lymphatic pathways were obstructed at multiple sites in their journey to join the venous system. It is not known how often the typically submucosal tumors associated with this condition obstruct lymphatics, in part, because before the advent of capsule endoscopy, the ligament of Treitz marked our distal-most point of observation. Regardless, von Recklinghausen’s disease joins the list of named syndromes associated with intestinal lymphangiectasia: Turner’s, Noonan’s, Klippel-Trénaunay, and Hennekam. Lawrence J.
