Endoscopic diagnosis and removal of Ascaris lumbricoides during colonoscopy for polyp surveillance (with video) - 17/08/11
| Commentary Ascaris has a worldwide distribution and is estimated to be harbored by 25% of the world’s population. It is usually asymptomatic, but, in the GI tract, it most commonly presents with small-bowel obstruction. The Roth net was a convenient way to remove the worm, although such removal is not critical, because oral therapy is highly effective. Also, the release of eggs upon biopsy probably would have no adverse effect, because eggs must incubate for 10 to 15 days (in soil) before becoming infective. Lawrence J.
