, Noreen Nicol, MS, RN, FNP a, cRiassunto |
Treating atopic dermatitis can present a challenge to the clinician. Conventional therapy should be based on a thorough understanding of the individual patient's disease. Avoiding possible irritants and proven allergens while hydrating and using moisturizers and topical corticosteroids remain the mainstay of therapy. Relieving itch, especially at night, through the use of sedating antihistamines is an important component of therapy. Recalcitrant disease can be treated with wet dressings. It is critical that the patient or family receives appropriate education about the illness and treatment options, and that the physician addresses quality of life issues as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
