LASER TISSUE WELDING - 08/09/11
Riassunto |
During the last 30 years, there has been an explosion of new technology within medicine that has often outpaced our ability to embrace each new concept. The technical and logistic aspects of new ideas have been challenging. More importantly, however, the far-reaching impact of a new idea or device has been difficult to grasp in the face of this recent technologic acceleration. Laser tissue welding is one such technologic innovation that is beginning to move from the theoretical laboratory environment to the reality of clinical application. Laser welding will have applicability in almost all surgical fields, and none, perhaps as far reaching as in urology. A review of the concepts, potential advantages, and techniques involved in laser tissue welding as they apply to urology can only be beneficial as this new technology arises (Table 1).
