This article reviews a number of specific infections that can occur after cardiothoracic surgery procedures and that may manifest in the critical care unit or require further care in a CCU. Other infections seen in the postoperative patient will not be covered here. Additionally, the various infections associated with cardiac transplantation that relate to the immunologic suppression used with this procedure also will not be addressed.
