Vesicoureteral reflux, from the perspective of the primary care physician, should be thought of primarily as a risk factor for pyelonephritis. Reflux is not a cause of urinary tract infections, nor does it cause renal damage. In its most benign state, one could simply conceptualize it as an interesting radiographic finding. Unfortunately, that is often not the situation.
