Blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelid free margin, are a very common cause of eye or eyelid irritation. They especially appear in the context of rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis, but may be secondary to chronic conjunctival inflammation (allergy, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, cicatricial pemphigoid, Sjögren syndrome), chronic staphylococcal infection, or aging. The ocular manifestations are variable, ranging from simple dry evaporative syndrome to immunological keratitis sometimes blinding. Treatment is primarily based on eyelids care and in the more severe forms, oral antibiotics (cyclins first) or local antibiotics, corticosteroids and cyclosporine eye drops are used.
