Le but de cette étude était d'évaluer l'efficacité de la prise en charge technique de l'intubation orotrachéale difficile (IOTD) par l'utilisation en première intention du mandrin d'Eschmann.

Étude observationnelle rétrospective menée sur huit ans.

Toutes les IOTD au cours des inductions réalisées au bloc opératoire de notre institution ont été recensées et analysées durant la période allant de 1998 à 2005, qu'elles aient été réalisées de manière classique, avec fibrobronchoscope ou avec mandrin d'Eschmann.

Sur 15657 intubations, 301 intubations ont été décrites comme difficiles. Le mandrin d'Eschmann a été utilisé 276 fois avec un taux de réussite de 99 %.

Notre étude a retrouvé les chiffres issus de la littérature, notamment anglo-saxonne, et démontre l'intérêt de l'utilisation du mandrin d'Eschmann en première intention dans la prise en charge des IOTD.

The objective was to check on the effectiveness of difficult orotracheal intubation by Eschmannʼs gum elastic bougie in our institution.

Retrospective observation study led for eight years.

All the orotracheal intubations during the inductions in the surgical unit of the hospital of Laon were listed from 1998 to 2005, whether they were achieved in a classical way, with a fibrobronchoscope or with Eschmannʼs gum elastic bougie.

Out of 15,657 intubations, 301 of them were difficult. Eschmannʼs gum elastic bougie was used 276 times with a rate of success of 99%.

Our study confirms the figures of publications, particularly the anglo-saxon ones and proves the interest of the Eschmannʼs gum elastic bougie in orotracheal intubations and this in first intention.
