Translatory “single-block” displacements of the maxilla, which are generally held to be responsible for almost all upper jaw growth, rarely occur beyond 6 or 7 years of age. They are gradually replaced by selective displacements of posterolateral and anterior cortical bone with “adapted” growth of the external cortical sutures.
The premaxilla, which is fused with the anterior cortical bone, contributes to the sagittal growth of this “exo-peri-maxillary” structure.
The crucial role of lingual and occlusal forces in the expansive development of this structure accounts for the importance of functional normalization in the normal development of the “maxillary complex” and the stability of orthopaedic treatment.
