Endophthalmitis can be defined as an inflammatory response to a bacterial, fungal, or parasitic invasion of the eye. Endophthalmitis remains a serious complication, whether it occurs after controlled eye surgery, trauma, contiguity or endogenously. Major advances have been made in identifying the microorganisms responsible for endophthalmitis, including molecular biology, and also the awareness and mobilization of professionals facing this potentially blinding disease are growing. Precautions to comply with basic hygienic rules are the best guarantors against this potentially blinding infection that affects more than one thousand patients per year in France. The study of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) has revolutionized antibioprophylaxis management. Other novelties include antibiotherapy adapted to endophthalmitis and the evolution of antimicrobial resistance.
