Damage control is not a surgical technique or a degraded solution, but a global concept of management of the severe trauma from the accident site to its final treatment. The DC is based on a survival chain to place the right gesture at the right time, allowing the patient to arrive alive at the next step without loss of chance. Time is a major factor in DC success. The indications for DC are individual early (severe traumatism), individual late (severe traumatism not able to withstand a first surgery too long) and collective (context of massive casualties). The DC resuscitation must necessarily be articulated with the surgical DC. The latter relies on deliberately simple and partial gestures to allow a second time on a stabilised patient. DC resuscitation is based on early hemostasis, lethal triad correction and permissive hypotension.
